What this service does
We check whether a tenancy deposit was registered with one of the three government approved schemes in England: the Deposit Protection Service, the Tenancy Deposit Scheme, and mydeposits. The check is free.
If the check suggests you may have a claim and you choose to take it further, we can introduce you to a solicitor. You are never obliged to do so.

Why we use it, and our legal basis
Under UK data protection law we must have a legal basis for everything we do with your information. Ours are set out below.
Why we use it, and our legal basis
Under UK data protection law we must have a legal basis for everything we do with your information. Here is ours, in plain terms.
To run your check and tell you the result, and to answer any questions you have about it, our basis is the performance of a contract with you. You asked us to do something, and this is us doing it.
To introduce you to a solicitor and share your details with them so they can assess whether you have a claim, our basis is your consent. We will not pass your details to anyone until you tell us to.
To send you marketing emails or text messages about things we think are relevant to renters, our basis is your consent. You have to actively agree, and you can change your mind whenever you like.
To show you advertising on social media, so we can reach people who might find the service useful, our basis is your consent, given through our cookie settings.
To keep records of checks, enquiries and consents, so we can run the business, sort out any disputes and meet our legal obligations, our basis is our legitimate interests and, where the law requires us to keep something, compliance with a legal obligation.
To improve the service and understand how people use it, our basis is our legitimate interests in making it work better.
Where we rely on legitimate interests, we have considered whether our interest is outweighed by your rights, and we will explain that assessment to you if you ask.
You can withdraw consent at any time. For marketing, use the unsubscribe link in any email, reply STOP to any text, or email us. Withdrawing consent does not affect anything we did before you withdrew it, and it will not stop us providing the check itself.
Marketing
We will only send you marketing emails or texts if you have specifically agreed to receive them. Agreeing to marketing is never a condition of using the free check, and it is a separate tick box, never bundled with anything else.
Every marketing message we send will tell you who it is from and give you a simple way to stop receiving them. If you opt out, we keep a minimal record of your email address or phone number for the sole purpose of making sure we do not contact you again.
Who we share your information with
Solicitors. If you ask us to take your case further, we pass your details to a solicitor so they can assess your claim. They become an independent controller of your information at that point and will have their own privacy policy. We will tell you which firm before we make the introduction.
We are paid a referral fee by the solicitor. You never pay us anything.
The deposit protection schemes. We submit the details needed to search their records.
Our suppliers. We use third party services to run the business, for example website hosting, database hosting, email and text message delivery, and customer support tools. They act on our instructions only and are bound by contracts requiring them to keep your information secure. Our current suppliers are:
Perspective (funnel and lead capture)
Supabase (database, hosted in London)
Hostinger (server hosting)
Vercel (website hosting)
Resend (email delivery)
GoHighLevel (customer records and text messages)
Google Workspace (email and documents)
Meta Platforms (advertising, including the Meta pixel and Conversions API)
Meta Platforms. Our funnel uses the Meta pixel and the Meta Conversions API. Where you have consented, these send information about your visit and your actions to Meta so we can measure our advertising and reach similar people. This can include a hashed version of your email address or phone number. You can withdraw consent at any time through our cookie settings, and you can control advertising in your own Facebook and Instagram settings.
Anyone we are legally required to share with, including regulators, law enforcement and courts.
We do not sell your personal information.
Where your information is held
Our suppliers may store or process information outside the UK. Where they do, we make sure the transfer is covered by an adequacy decision, the UK International Data Transfer Agreement, the UK Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses, or another lawful safeguard. You can ask us for details of the safeguards that apply.
How long we keep it
We do not keep your information for longer than we need it.
If you use the check and no claim goes any further, we keep what you gave us for two years from the last time you were in touch with us. That gives us enough time to answer any questions you come back with, and to show what we did and why if we are ever asked.
If your case is referred to a solicitor, we keep those records for seven years from the date of the referral. This is a business record of the introduction and of the referral fee we were paid, and seven years is the period we are comfortable we can evidence our own accounts and dealings.
Marketing consents and preferences are kept for as long as you are subscribed. If you unsubscribe, we keep a minimal record of your email address or phone number indefinitely, purely so we can prove you consented in the first place and, more importantly, so we never contact you again by mistake.
Website analytics and advertising information is kept for 14 months.
When one of these periods ends we either delete the information or strip it back so it can no longer identify you.
Cookies
Our website uses cookies. Essential cookies are needed to make the site work.
Analytics and advertising cookies, including the Meta pixel, are only set if you consent. You can change your mind at any time using the cookie settings link in our website footer. Full detail is in our Cookie Policy, linked in the footer of every page.
Automated decision making
Our check compares the details you give us against the deposit scheme records. The result is not a legal opinion and it is not a decision about you. A result of "we could not find a record" is not proof that your deposit was unprotected, and a result showing a record is not proof that your landlord met every requirement. A person, and where relevant a solicitor, looks at anything that goes further.
We do not carry out automated decision making that produces legal effects for you or similarly significantly affects you.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to:
be told how we use your information, which is what this policy does
get a copy of the information we hold about you
have it corrected if it is wrong or incomplete
have it deleted in certain circumstances
restrict how we use it in certain circumstances
object to us using it, including an absolute right to object to direct marketing
receive it in a portable format where we rely on consent or contract and process it automatically
withdraw consent at any time where we rely on it
These rights are free to exercise. Email hello@freedepositcheck.co.uk and we will respond within one month. If your request is complex we may extend that by up to two further months, and we will tell you if so.
Complaining to us
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your personal information, you have the right to complain to us directly. This right came into force on 19 June 2026 under the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025.
You can complain in any way that suits you, including by email to hello@freedepositcheck.co.uk, in writing to our registered office, or by messaging us on social media. You do not have to use a particular form or a particular form of words.
We will acknowledge your complaint within 30 days of receiving it, look into it properly, and tell you the outcome without undue delay.
Complaining to the regulator
You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at any time. The Commissioner usually expects you to have complained to us first.
